Griffin Wins Title, 'Canes Take 2nd at Spring

PHILADELPHIA, Miss. - He's been named a Peach Belt Conference
Player of the Week. He's finished in the top five in four
tournaments and been a runner-up once during his collegiate career.
Now, Georgia Southwestern golfer J.P. Griffin can add "champion" to
his resume. Griffin fired a 1-over 73 on Monday to win the
individual title at the two-round Frito Lay/Taco Bell
Intercollegiate hosted by Jackson State.
GSW finished two strokes behind Division I McNeese State University
for the top spot in the team standings. The Hurricanes opened Day 2
in second out of the 14 schools represented in the tournament, 10
of which are NCAA D-I.
Griffin tied for the low round on Day 1 at the par-72, 7128-yard
Dancing Rabbit Golf Course with a 74 and ended a stoke behind the
low round of Day 2 with his 73. Teammate Craig Gibson ended with a
two-day total of 150 which was good for sixth place in the
73-player field. Nate Gahman went 75-78 (153) to tie for 16th.
Christopher Hall shaved two strokes off his Day 1 79 score to end
with a 12-over 156. Chris Campos tied for 68th in the opening
tournament of the spring for the Blue & Gold.
The Hurricanes travels to the Big Easy this weekend to begin play
at the University of New Orleans Mardi Gras Invitational on Monday
morning.
Pacers Open Spring Campaign With Sixth Place Finish at
Wexford

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – The nationally 15th-ranked
University of South Carolina Aiken golf team finished in sixth
place as a team at the Seventh Annual Wexford Plantation
Intercollegiate at the 6,828-yard par 72 Wexford Plantation
Course.
The tournament was the spring opener for the nationally-ranked
Pacers, who were the only NCAA Division II team in the NCAA
Division I tournament.
The Pacers carded a team three-round cumulative tally of 912
(309-301-302) to acquire the sixth place finish.
USC Aiken had two players finish in the top 12 in the event with JP
Solis (Morelia, Mexico/Lico Morelia) leading the way with a ninth
place finish. Solis (75-76-72) fired an even 72 in the final round
to move up from 17th and finish tied with two others for ninth at
223.
The top 10 finish was the ninth of Solis’ Pacer career.
USC Aiken’s Matt Atkins (Owensboro, Ky./Henderson State)
ended the first event of the spring for the Pacers in a tie with
William & Mary’s Jeremy Wells for 12th. Atkins carded a
three-round tally of 224 (75-73-76).
Georgia State claimed the overall team title at the Seventh Annual
Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate with a team tally of 892
(297-294-301). Furman finished second at 898 (309-292-297), while
Davidson came in third at 903 (303-295-305).
Georgia State’s Damon Stephenson claimed individual medalist
honors at the event by posting a 216 (72-71-73).
USC Aiken will next play host to the 15th Annual Cleveland Palmetto
Intercollegiate on Monday, March 5 and Tuesday, March 6 at the
Palmetto Golf Club in Aiken, S.C.
