2009 Volleyball Team Notes (Through Games of Nov. 8)

  Armstrong Atlantic State (24-8, 11-3) -- The Pirates wrapped up the regular season with two wins in three matches on the week and will head into the PBC Championships as the No. 2 seed ... AASU dropped a tough four-set match at Flagler on Wednesday, led by Brendyce Budd's 11 kills ... The Pirates rebounded with 3-0 wins over Francis Marion and UNC Pembroke on the weekend ... Budd hit a career-high .647 in the win over UNCP ... Senior Nicole Yates became the sixth player in AASU history to record 1,000 digs. The Shorewood, Ill., native has 1,034 digs in her four-year career ... Freshman Kathrin Standhardinger is the top-hitting freshman in the nation at .398, while Michele Remlinger currently ranks as the top-hitting player in AASU history with a .358 hitting percentage.
  Augusta State (22-11, 9-5) -- Augusta State went 1-1 on the week and moved to 22-11 on the season and 9-5 in the conference. The Jaguars closed out their home schedule with a 3-1 conference win over USC Aiken… ASU then ended its regular season with a loss to Anderson, 3-1… Senior Jessica Howard paced the Jags with 41 kills on the week, including 22 kills against USC Aiken… Howard also booked 13 total blocks… Junior Dianna Meyer tallied 20 kills and posted 20 digs on the week, while senior Lindsey Weider added 30 digs over the week… Sophomore setter Ashley Zappitell notched 78 assists on the week, including 43 assists against USC Aiken… ASU is back in action when they compete in the Peach Belt Conference Tournament, which is slated for Nov. 13-14 in Aiken, S.C.

Flagler (29-8, 13-1) -- Flagler closed out the regular season with a 6-0 record last week. The Saints claimed the Peach Belt Conference regular season title outright after a 3-0 win over UNC Pembroke. With a 3-0 win in the season finale against SCAD, the 2009 Saints broke the school record for consecutive wins with 22. The previous record was 21 set in 2003. Katie Beale and Meg Weathersby turned out to be the dynamic duo for the week. Beale topped the team with 85 kills and 71 digs while Weathersby recorded 81 kills, hit .335, recorded 44 digs and tallied 12 total blocks. She also had eight aces. Justine Burkhardt added 53 kills and Rachel Stacy supplied 40 more and she hit .345 for the week. Becky Hendrian led the team with 11 aces. Flagler opens up the PBC Tournament on Friday against UNC Pembroke.
  Francis Marion (11-19, 3-11) -- Playing without the services of two starters, FMU lost three PBC road matches last week.....FMU leads the PBC in blocks per game...Sophomore OH Ardelia Morris averaged 2.55 kills per game last week....Junior MB Mallory Eggert is 2nd in the PBC in blocks per game and 10th in hitting percentage....Senior MB Caitlin Simpson is 3rd in the PBC in blocks per game....Junior libero Kelsie Deaton has 17 career matches of 20+ digs, and has 1,303 career digs. She is 3rd in the PBC in digs per game.....FMU has won 21 of its last 29 home matches.....Only 67 times in its last 163 matches has FMU lost the opening game....Senior setter Jess O’Leary averaged 6.91 assists and 2.91 digs per game last week. She now has 1,509 career assists. In a 5-game loss at UNCP, she recorded 37 assists and 22 digs.....Over the past five years, FMU is 66-33 in matches decided in three games....FMU plays AASU in the quarterfinals of the PBC Tournament on Nov. 13 at 4 pm.
  Lander (17-14, 5-9) -- Lander finished the regular-season portion of its schedule with a 3-0 loss at Montevallo in the only game the Bearcats played last week. Magi Nottingham led the Bearcat attack with 11 kills, while Ashley Ferry had 18 digs. Lander is the No. 6 seed in this weekend's PBC tournament and will face third-seeded Augusta State in the first round. Lander and Augusta State split their regular-season matches as the Bearcats won at Augusta, 3-1, and the Lady Jags downed Lander in Greenwood, 3-2. With her five kills Saturday, Melissa McCracken broke the single-season record at Lander with 404 kills, surpassing 402 set by Andrea Griffin in 2007. In PBC statistics, Ferry leads the league in digs per game with 4.88, while McCracken is second in kills per game with 3.66, Candace LaRocca is fourth in assists per game (8.48), Kendall Eayrs is sixth in hitting percentage (.268), and Chelsey Corgan is eighth in service aces per game (0.35).
Montevallo (19-13, 8-6) -- The Falcons went 3-1 in the final week of the regular season picking up two key conference wins... UM opened on the road against tough non-conference opponent West Florida and fell 3-0... The Falcons then returned home for a trimatch with USC Aiken and Miles College... The Falcons went five sets with Aiken having to win the final three to take away a 3-2 win... Against Miles the Falcons won 3-0... The Falcons won the final match of the week 3-0 against Lander... UM secured the fourth seed in the Peach Belt Tournament and will take on USC Aiken in the first round on Friday... UM was led by Katie Johnson this week as she averaged 3.71 kills per set and 2.21 digs... Sophomore setter Anna Garrison continued to shine while averaging 10.9 assists per set and 3.33 digs per set.
  UNC Pembroke (11-20, 2-12) -- UNCP went 1-2 on the week, picking up its second PBC victory of the season in a match against Francis Marion on Wednesday night, before falling to Flagler on Friday 3-0 and then to Armstrong Atlantic State on Saturday, 3-0. Senior libero Andrea Laza set the PBC record for career digs against Flagler on Friday night. The Cary, N.C., native now has 2,261 career digs in her four seasons in the Black & Gold. The Braves finished the regular season with an 11-20 record overall, a 2-12 record in the PBC, 5-5 at home, 2-9 on the road and 4-6 at neutral sites. For the second consecutive year, the Braves finish the season with only two conference wins (2-8 in 2008). With its 2-12 conference record UNCP will be the No. 8 seed in the upcoming PBC tournament and will face off against the No. 1 seeded Saints of Flagler College. Flagler has already defeated the Braves twice this season, and the Saints are 3-0 lifetime against Pembroke.
  USC Aiken (14-17, 5-9) -- USC Aiken was 1-2 last week ... The Pacers opened the week with a 3-1 loss to Augusta State (24-26,25-18,25-20,26-24) ... USC Aiken opened its next match against Montevallo by taking a 3-2 lead ... Montevallo would rebound by winning the next three games and the match with a 3-2 victory (19-25,20-25,25-13,27-25,15-13) ... USC Aiken easily won its last match of the week 3-0 over Miles (25-10,25-15,25-11) ... USC Aiken concluded the Peach Belt Conference season with a 5-9 record in the league ... The Pacers are the fifth seed in the upcoming Peach Belt Conference Tournament at the Convocation Center in Aiken, S.C. ... USC Aiken will take on fifth-seeded Montevallo in the quarterfinals of the PBC Tournament at approximately 6 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 13 ... The third ranked team in the NCAA Division II Southeast Region, the Pacers enter the final week of the regular season with a 14-17 record ... USC Aiken has one more regular season non-conference match this week before opening the PBC Tournament against Montevallo ... The Pacers will close out the season with a 7 p.m. match against Newberry at the Convocation Center on Tuesday, Nov. 10.
