UNCP Track & Field, Cross Country Announce 2017 Signing Class

PEMBROKE – Dr. Peter Ormsby announced multiple additions to both his 2017-18 cross country and track & field rosters on Monday afternoon when 11 student-athletes inked their names to national letters of intent to continue their academic and athletic careers with the Braves.
 
The list includes a bevy of impressive superlatives, including a myriad of state qualifiers in multiple events, as well as standout grade point averages as well. The crop includes five student-athletes who will compete on both the cross country and track & field squads as well.
 
The cross country team will open up its 2017 schedule on September 2 when it heads to north central North Carolina for the Elon Open.
 
Sam Badami
5-1, Distance/Cross Country
Orlando, Fla. (University HS)

HIGH SCHOOL: Prepped at University High School for coach Eric Lodge … Earned team most valuable runner recognition in cross country as a senior, while also taking home honors for best senior cross country runner and best senior track athlete … Turned in season-best 5K time of 20:53 … Also posted a time of 2:25 in the 800-meter run and a mark of 12:56 in the 3,200-meter run.
 
PERSONAL: The daughter of Brenda and Sam Badami … Has a younger sister, Ariana … Maintained a 4.7 cumulative grade point average at University High School … A nursing major at UNCP.

HIGH SCHOOL: Prepped at St. Stephens High School for coach Matt Reep … Earned most distinguished runner recognition as a senior … Recorded times of 1:05 in the 400-meter dash, 2:40 in the 800-meter run and 5:42 in the 1,600-meter run … Led Indians to a runner-up finish at the region meet and their first appearance at the state meet in 25 years … A two-time qualifier for the cross country state championship meet … Also qualified for the indoor state track & field meet in the 3,200-meter run … Registered season-best times of 20:45 in the 5K and 12:45 in the 3,200-meter run.
 
PERSONAL: The daughter of Laura and Kenneth Bolling … Has three brothers – Corey, Jordan and Garrett … Maintained a 4.3 cumulative grade point average at St. Stephens High School and graduated in the top 20 percent of her 250-member senior class … A psychology major at UNCP.

Khalina Boyce
5-4, Sprints/Hurdles
Woodbridge, Va. (Potomac Senior HS)

HIGH SCHOOL: Prepped at Potomac Senior High School for coach Chris Richardson … Led Panthers to a conference championship as a senior … Captured the conference crown in the 100-meter dash with a time of 15.02 seconds and grabbed the region title in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.6 seconds.
 
PERSONAL: The daughter of Kenda and Calvin Boyce … An exercise and sports science major at UNCP.

Pinnacle, N.C. (North Stokes HS)

HIGH SCHOOL: Prepped at North Stokes High School for coach Mike Williams … Tallied a fourth place showing in the indoor shot put as a senior … Qualified for indoor and outdoor state meet in the shot put in each of last two prep seasons … Also qualified for the outdoor state meet in the discus throw as both a junior and senior as well … Finished runner-up in the discus throw as a senior, and third in the shot put at the outdoor state championships … Recorded season-best marks of 142-feet, 4-inches in the discus throw, and 50-feet, ½-inch in the shot put … Grabbed a fifth place showing at the outdoor state meet in both the shot put and discus as a junior … Helped lead the Vikings to a runner-up showing at the state championship meet.

HIGH SCHOOL: Prepped at North Brunswick High School for coach Garry Bishop … Qualified for state indoor meet in the high jump, triple jump and 55-meter hurdles, and qualified for state outdoor meet in high jump and 110-meter hurdles … Finished third in the high jump at the indoor championships, while posting a fourth place showing in the 110-meter hurdles at the outdoor championships … Qualified for regional meet in high jump and triple jump, as well as the 110- and 300-meter hurdles … Grabbed the conference title in the high jump and the county championship in the high jump … Also lettered in football and basketball for the Scorpions.
 
PERSONAL: The son Dionne and Jonathan DeBerry … Has a younger brother, Bryce, and a younger sister, Zia … Maintained a 3.85 cumulative grade point average at North Brunswick High School and graduated in the top 18 percent of his 254-member senior class … A business major at UNCP.

HIGH SCHOOL: Prepped at Hobbton High School for coach Jeffrey Klaves … Earned second-straight all-county honors as a senior, while also capturing her second-straight conference championship as well … A three-time outdoor state qualifier and two-time indoor state qualifier in the 3,200-meter run … Also qualified twice for the state cross country championships … Registered personal-best times of 2:40 in the 800-meter run and 12:45 in the 3200-meter run … Also ran a personal-best 20:45 in the 5K run … Was also a four-time all-county selection in soccer for the Wildcats … Named region player of the year as a senior.
 
PERSONAL: The daughter of Margie and Mark Hinterleiter … Maintained a 3.6 cumulative grade point average at Hobbton High School … An athletic training major at UNCP.

Tallahassee, Fla. (Maclay School)

HIGH SCHOOL: Prepped at Maclay School for coach Gary Droze … Qualified for the state meet in both the 1,600-meter and 3,200-meter runs as a senior … A six-time all-Big Bend selection … Captured the region championship in the 3,200-meter run, as well as a trio of district titles … A four-time state qualifier in cross country … Registered personal best times of 2:34 in the 800-meter run, 5:29 in the 1,600-meter run and 11:23 in the 3,200-meter run … Also posted a personal-best time of 19:49 in the 5K run.
