Flagler defeats Lander in double-OT thriller

Fernandez scores golden goal to complete comeback

EVANS, Ga. — Friday Night Lights didn't disappoint.

This matchup featured the third-seeded Flagler women's soccer team overcoming a first-half deficit and turning it into a double-overtime, 2-1, victory over second-seeded Lander University in the Peach Belt Conference Tournament semifinal at Blanchard Woods Park.

The win places the Saints (14-2-1) in the PBC championship while the loss ends Lander's season at 11-5-1. Flagler will defend its PBC Tournament title versus Columbus State (18-1-1) Sunday at 3 p.m.

"Lander's season was on the line today and they played with a real intensity," Flagler head coach Ashley Martin said. "They put us under pressure at times, but we held out and took control of the game as it progressed. I thought we were a little unlucky to be 1-0 down, we applied sustained pressure in the second half and OT. The winning goal was spectacular but is something we have become accustomed to this season."

The game-winning goal came via none other than the PBC Player and Freshman of the Year: Andrea Fernandez. The standout netted her 15th in fashion as she drilled an absolute screamer from 30 yards out into the left corner to send the Saints into the title match.

The sensational freshman wouldn't have had the opportunity without Moa Arlebo's equalizer in the 79th minute. The sophomore scored her fourth of the season at the right time after Annie Habeeb fought through multiple defenders to get her the ball in the box.

The goals were coming for Flagler; it was just a question to when it would happen as the Saints had 22 shots to the Bearcats' four. After conceding a goal on a 25-yard free kick in the first half, Madison North was stellar in goal behind a pair of second-half saves.

It was a breakthrough the Saints fought for all night to defeat the team, who handed them their first regular-season loss since 2019 earlier in the year. And now, the team who owns Flagler's lone other regular-season loss is next on deck: Columbus State.
