Lenoir-Rhyne edges Flagler in PK shootout

PENSACOLA, Fla. — The fourth-seeded Flagler College women's soccer team's season came to an unfortunate end Friday afternoon in the NCAA Division II Southeast Region Final as seventh-seeded Lenoir-Rhyne University advanced in a penalty kick shootout, 1-1 (4-2), at the UWF Soccer Complex.

The 18th-ranked Saints finish the season at 17-2-2 with their third straight Peach Belt Conference championship to show for, while the Bears (12-5-4) continue with a chance to head to the Final Four Sunday. It was the final match for five super seniors — Hannah Dolores, Maria Castorino Mujica, Annie Habeeb, Lorena Lopez and Lauren Lannan — as the group leaves a stamp on the program behind five PBC championships, a Southeast Regional title and a Final Four appearance.

"I couldn't be more proud of our group today," Flagler head coach Ashley Martin said. "We gave a great performance, but unfortunately, we couldn't find the crucial second goal. LR was disciplined and defended extremely well, and they took their chance when it presented itself.

I'm sad for the super-seniors in particular, who have given so much to our program over the years, and helped take this program to new heights. Coaching this team has been an enormous pleasure, and everyone associated with the program can be proud of these magnificent young women."

A scoreless first half brought an exciting final 45 minutes and more. In the 52nd minute, Habeeb netted her 11th goal of the season on a penalty kick to put the Saints ahead. The lead stayed true until the 87th minute when the Bears' Leonie Proessl chipped a shot up and into the right corner for the equalizer.

Flagler dominated the match across the board, outshooting the LR 28-to-9 —with 18 of those being on goal to the Bears' seven — but LR's Grayson Cameron was strong in the net. The keeper punched out 17 saves and defended 12 cornerkicks against an aggressive Saints' attack, while Flagler's Madison North had six saves and saw a pair of LR corner kicks.

After a pair of scoreless 10-minute overtime periods, LR began the shootout and had made PKs by Prossel, Madi Kyle, Stephani Figueiredo and Kate Casey, while Habeeb and Jess Leach were the two who made their attempts for the Saints.
