ST. AUGUSTINE, FLA – The Lander men’s golf team set a PBC Tournament scoring record with a 272 in the opening round of the 2021 men’s golf championship in St. Augustine. The Bearcats also set a PBC record with a 10-stroke lead after the opening round of play at the Slammer & Squire Course at the World Golf Village. Lander’s 16-under-par effort puts them 10 strokes ahead of Young Harris in second place with USC Aiken in third and Georgia College and Columbus State tied for fourth.

The second round will be contested on Saturday with the final round on Sunday.

Lander’s Chris Fortenberry holds the individual lead after shooting a six-under 66 on the 6,939-yard, par 72 layout. The sophomore was at even par through the first nine holes, but birdied six of the first seven holes on the back, including four in a row starting with the 10th hole.

Chung did not have bogey in his round of 68 with four birdies, two on the front and two on the back.

USC Aiken’s Leo Johansson is tied for fifth with Young Harris’ David Frank at three-under 69. Johansson had four straight birdies on the back nine while Frank had three birdies on the front nine.
