GREENWOOD, SC – Lucas Bedleg and Chris Salamatou provided the goals and the Georgia Southwestern defense did the rest as the fifth-seeded Hurricanes upset #4 Young Harris 2-0 in the Peach Belt men’s soccer quarterfinals on Friday night in Greenwood. With that win, the first tournament win in program history, the ‘Canes will stay in Greenwood and face top-seeded Lander on Sunday at 1:00. The winner of that game will move to the PBC Tournament Championship the next Sunday, Nov. 6.

With the sun setting on a beautiful night in Greenwood, the Hurricanes brought the storm, scoring just 10 minutes after the opening kick. A GSW corner kick led to a loose ball in front of the net where Bedleg, fresh off of being named All-Conference yesterday, blasted it home for a 1-0 GSW lead.

That lead would hold through halftime until the 30 minute mark in the second half when Salamatou, in one of the great displays of ball handling, wove through eight Lander defenders on his own to put home a touch goal and a 2-0 lead.

Throughout it all was the GSW defense, which was tested against the potent Mountain Lion attack throughout the game. Young Harris outshot GSW 13-10 with seven of those shots on goal, all saved by Juan Ramirez who turned in his first shutout of the season in his second start.

The GSW defense backed Ramirez, including a team save just after the Hurricanes’ second goal when All-Conference forward Mikkel Goeling of Young Harris got a ball past the GSW keeper only to have it knocked away by a defender. The shutout was GSW’s sixth of the season.

GSW advances to the PBC semifinals for the first time in program history. GSW has faced Lander twice this season, the first time a scoreless tie and the second a 2-0 Bearcats win. Lander received a quarterfinal bye as the top seed.
