AIKEN, SC -- The Peach Belt Conference released the 2023-24 men's basketball All-Conference team at a banquet in Aiken, S.C., on the eve of the conference tournament. USC Aiken's Tyler Johnson was named the league Player of the Year with his head coach Mark Vanderslice the Herbert Greene Coach of the Year. Flagler's Jalen Barr was named the Defensive Player of the Year and USC Beaufort's Marcus Overstreet the Freshman of the Year. All major PBC awards are presented by College Ave Student Loans with the exception of the Elite 18 which is presented by Barnes & Noble College.
Johnson earns his second All-Conference honor and first Player of the Year award after starting in 27 of 28 games for the PBC Champion Pacers. The junior guard from Athens, Ga., averaged 16.6 points and 6.5 rebounds per game. When the Pacers were hit with injuries, he stepped up his game, averaging 19.5 ppg over his last 12 contests with four games of 20 or more points and two with 30 or more. The PBC Player of the Week on March 4, he was second in the PBC in scoring in conference-only games with 18.1 per outing to go with 7.1 rebounds per game. Overall, he was eighth in the PBC in field goal percentage, ninth in free throw percentage and second in steals. Johnson becomes the fourth USC Aiken PBC Player of the Year, the first since Re'Mon Nelson in 2013.
Jalen Barr was a key reason that Flagler led the PBC in assist to turnover ratio this season. A junior guard from Charlotte, N.C., he was sixth in the PBC in steals per game with 41 on the season to go with 13 blocked shots. He started in 22 of 26 games for Flagler, who were second in the PBC in steals per game as a team. He added 8.2 points and was second on the team and 10th in the PBC in rebounds per game at 6.5. Barr becomes the fifth PBC player to earn a second PBC Defensive Player of the Year after winning in 2021.
Marcus Overstreet was a dominant force for a brand-new program at USC Beaufort in 2023-24. A center from Chicago, Ill., he was second in the PBC in scoring at 17.6 ppg and led the conference in rebounding with 11.0 per game, the fourth-highest single-season rebounding average in league history. The PBC Player of the Week on Feb. 5, he had 13 games of 20 or more points, including a 36-point effort against Columbus State which was the most by any player in a single game in the conference. He also led the conference in field goal percentage and was 10th in blocks. Overstreet becomes the first Sand Shark to win a major PBC award.
Mark Vanderslice ran the gauntlet in the final week of the regular season to lead the Pacers to their second straight PBC Championship. In his ninth year leading USC Aiken, Vanderslice led the Pacers to wins at #15 North Georgia and against Lander, the top two teams in the latest NCAA regional poll. With a top-3 scoring offense and scoring defense, USCA led the PBC in scoring margin and three-point percentage. USC Aiken is currently ranked #23 in the nation by the NABC and #22 by D2SIDA and have a great chance at being the #1 team in the next NCAA poll, which will be released on Wednesday. Vanderslice earns his second straight Herbert Greene PBC Coach of the Year honor, the third of his career.
