GSW's Gomez, UNG's Smith Named PING First-Team All-Americans

PALM BEACH GARDENS, FLA -- Georgia Southwestern's Felipe Gomez and North Georgia's Hunter Smith were named PING First-Team All-Americans by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) following the conclusion of stroke play at the NCAA National Championships. The GCAA will release the full All-America team in the coming weeks.

This is the second year in a row and third time in the last five years that the PBC has had two or more first-team All-Americans.

Smith became the fourth men's golfer in PBC history to win medalist honors at the NCAA National Championships as he shot a six-under 210 to win on Wednesday at the PGA National. A junior from Athens, Ga., he fired a five-under 67 in the second round as UNG finished fifth as team to reach the match play portion of the event. The win was the first in his collegiate career and his third top-10 finish of this season as he has a 71.83 stroke average with 21 of his 36 rounds played at or under par.

A senior from Santander, Spain, Gomez led the Peach Belt with a 71.03 stroke average, tied for the fifth-lowest season average in conference history. Ranked #4 in the nation by Scoreboard, Gomez played in nine events for the Hurricanes, finishing in the top 10 six times with a victory at the Spring Kick-Off Intercollegiate. He finished in sixth place at the NCAA South/Southeast Regional and earned an individual spot in the NCAA National Championships.
