Cowart Named NCBWA Southeast Region Player of the Week

SALISBURY, N.C. - Zach Cowart has been named the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Southeast Region Player of the Week, the organization announced Wednesday morning.

The honor is the first weekly award of Cowart's career and marks the third straight season a Lander player has earned Southeast Region Player of the Week recognition, joining Grant Sherrod in 2025 and Connor Droze in 2024.

Cowart, the Peach Belt Conference Tournament MVP, batted .500 across three games last week and recorded multiple hits in the bracket final against Columbus State and both games of the PBC Championship Series against 10th-ranked North Georgia.

The junior homered in all three games, beginning with a leadoff solo shot Monday against Columbus State that helped send the Bearcats to the championship series.

Cowart then delivered a pair of go-ahead two-run homers against North Georgia. The first came in the top of the ninth inning of game one with the score tied at 4-4 as he launched the first pitch of the at-bat an estimated 425 feet onto the softball field beyond Bob Stein Stadium to give Lander a 6-4 lead it would not relinquish.

He added another in game two, this time a 413-foot shot to center field that broke a 6-6 tie and gave the Bearcats an 8-6 lead on the way to an 11-7 victory and Lander's second straight PBC Tournament title.

Cowart and the Bearcats open NCAA Southeast Regional play Thursday at 6 p.m. against top-seeded North Greenville in Tigerville, S.C.
