Peach Belt Releases Men’s Soccer All-Conference Team

EVANS, GA – The Peach Belt Conference released the 2016 men's soccer All-Conference team at a banquet in Evans, Ga., ahead of the PBC Tournament semifinals, which begin on Friday.  Francis Marion's Levin Sandmann was named the PBC Player of the Year while Lander's Dean Cowdroy was tabbed the Freshman of the Year and his coach Lee Squires the Coach of the Year.  The league's head coaches selected the team.

Sandmann was the second-leading scorer in the Peach Belt during the regular season with 12 goals and 30 points.  After scoring another goal in FMU's quarterfinal loss to Flagler on Tuesday, he moved into a tie for the league lead in goals and now leads the PBC outright in points with 33.  A sophomore from Heidelberg, Germany, he picked up a hat-trick against Clayton State, which was the start of a four-game scoring streak.  His nine goals against conference opponents was tops in the league.  He was also tied for fourth in the PBC with seven assists on the season.  Sandmann becomes the first Patriot to ever be named the PBC Player of the Year.

Dean Cowdroy was the day-one starter as a freshman in goal for the Lander Bearcats.  From Canberra, Australia, he leads the PBC with seven shutouts this season, including Tuesday's 4-0 win over UNC Pembroke in the PBC quarterfinals.  Cowdroy played the second-most minutes in goal in the league this season and leads the conference with a 0.98 goals against average and is tops with a .781 save percentage.  Cowdroy was even more impressive against conference opponents with four shutouts in the nine Lander wins and a 0.76 GAA.  Cowdroy is the second straight Bearcat to be named the Freshman of the Year, joining teammate Hugo Delhommelle who took the honor last year.  His is the third Lander player overall to win the award.

In his second season as the head coach at Lander, Lee Squires accomplished something no Lander team had since 1996, he ran the table in the PBC.  The Bearcats were 9-0 against the league, winning their first regular-season championship since 2012 and enter this weekend's PBC Tournament semifinals as the top seed.  After a tough 1-3 start to the season, Squires turned things around and Lander has not lost since, bringing a 12-game winning streak to Blanchard Woods Park.  Lander also became the first PBC team to crack the NSCAA top 25 and now sit #18 in the nation and #4 in the NCAA region poll.  The Coach of the Year honor is his first.
