Lander, Young Harris Tied for 5th in United Soccer Coaches Preseason Men’s Poll

KANSAS CITY, MO – Lander and Young Harris are both tied for fifth as the United Soccer Coaches released their preseason national top 25.

The Peach Belt is the only conference with two teams in the top five.  It is the first time two PBC teams have been ranked in the top 10 in at least the last 10 years.

Lander also began the 2018 season nationally-ranked, coming in 18th in the preseason poll.  The Bearcats, winners of last season's Southeast Region championship, return three all-Southeast Region performers in junior midfielder Thibault Chretien, senior defender Kyle Ferguson, and sophomore goalkeeper Jacob Withers.

Head Coach Lee Squires led the Bearcats to a 16-2-3 overall record in 2018 and reached the quarterfinals in the NCAA Tournament for the third time in program history. Lander has qualified for the NCAA Tournament in each of the last four seasons, the second-longest streak in program history.

On this year's schedule, the Bearcats are slated to play two teams featured the United Soccer Coaches Preseason Poll. Lander will visit No. 25-ranked Limestone on Oct. 9 and will head to Young Harris on Oct. 19.

Lander will open up the 2019 season at Alabama-Huntsville on Sept. 6 and hosts Newberry for the home opener at Van Taylor Stadium on Sept. 11.

The Mountain Lions return 11 players from last year's team that went 17-1-1 and ranked No. 7 in the final United Soccer Coaches Division II poll. The Mountain Lions captured their fourth Peach Belt Conference regular-season and tournament titles as they earned the No. 1 seed from the Southeast region in NCAA Division II Tournament in 2018. It was the fourth trip for Young Harris to the NCAA Tournament.

Young Harris will play two matches this season against teams ranked in the preseason poll. The Mountain Lions will host No. 5 Lander University  in a 7 p.m. Peach Belt Conference match Oct. 19 at the YHC Soccer and Lacrosse Field, while they will face No. 25 Limestone College in a 5 p.m.  non-conference game Oct. 2 in Gaffney, South Carolina.

The Mountain Lions open up their 2019 schedule Sept. 5 when they entertain Emmanuel (Ga.) College in 5 p.m. non-conference match at the YHC Soccer and Lacrosse Field.
