Augusta Wins PBC Men’s Cross Country Title; UNCP’s Chepkesir Smashes Record

LUMBERTON, NC – Augusta University placed all five of their scoring runners in the top eight as they cruised to the Peach Belt Conference men's cross country championship on Saturday.  UNC Pembroke sophomore Joshua Chepkesir won the individual title, setting a new conference benchmark in the process.  The event was held at Luther Britt Park in Lumberton and hosted by UNC Pembroke.

The Jaguars won their second title in the last three years and fourth since 2011 with 29 total points.  Flagler finished second with 56 while host UNC Pembroke was third with 67 and Columbus State fourth with 107.

UNCP sophomore Joshua Chepkesir won the individual title in 23:48.04, the fastest 8k ever run at the PBC Championship.  His time beat the record set by North Florida's Zephernius Joseph in 2002 by 18 seconds. Chepkesir becomes the fifth PBC runner to win back-to-back individual titles.

Teammate Silus Kipkoech finished second with a time of 24:53.76, which is also among the top 15 fastest 8k times in PBC Championship history.  Augusta's Jacob Poston was third with Flagler's Marcus Graham in fourth.

The top 15 runners were named PBC All-Conference with Augusa claiming nine of those spots, the most All-Conference runners from one team in PBC history.

Flagler's Asad Bashir received the PBC Freshman of the Year award as the top-finishing freshman in the field.  He ran 26:13.32 to finish 12th.   He is the third Saint to ever with the Freshman of the Year honor, the first since Kray Hubner in 2016.

Augusta's Adam Ward was named the Coach of the Year in a vote of the league's head coaches taken after the race.  Ward receives his fourth award for coaching the men's team; he has also been named the women's Coach of the Year four times.
