HILTON HEAD, S.C. -- For the second straight year, Georgia College & State University was presented with the Peach Belt Conference Commissioner’s Cup, presented annually to the best overall athletic program in the league. The Bobcats won regular-season conference titles in baseball and men’s golf while finishing in the top three in women’s cross country, men’s basketball, women’s basketball and men’s tennis and were in the top half of the final standings in eight of the 10 league sports sponsored by the university. A charter member of the Peach Belt Conference, GCSU becomes the first school to repeat as cup champions since Columbus State won three straight from 2006-08.
The PBC Commissioner’s Cup is determined by calculating the number of points possible to each school, given the number of sports they participate in, divided by the number of points earned during the year. Points are determined by placement in the final regular-season standings of each of the PBC’s 13 championship sports. GCSU earned 85 of a possible 113 points available to them for a .752 rating while Columbus State earned 88 of a possible 119 points for a .739 rating.
Columbus State, with championships in men’s and women’s cross country and women’s soccer, finished second while Armstrong Atlantic State was third after winning the men’s and women’s tennis championships.
