HUNTSVILLE, ALA – Using a consistent blend of offensive efficiency and defensive guile, the Montevallo Falcons won the 2022 Peach Belt Conference Men’s Lacrosse Tournament 15-9 over the Alabama-Huntsville Chargers on Sunday in Huntsville. The Falcons (11-7) claim the tournament title for the second straight year, both wins coming against UAH. UM was the third seed entering the tournament and beat #2 Lander and #1 Alabama-Huntsville en route to the title.
The Chargers (10-7) scored the first goal of the game just 1:45 after the opening whistle as Reid Vender scored unassisted. But the Falcons would come back with three straight as Thomas Vaesen scored at the 10:30 mark followed by goals from Kordell Primus and Anthony Pecoraro.
UAH answered with a Brody Phillips goal at the 4:41 mark of the first quarter, but that would be their last score for nearly 15 minutes as Monteavllo scored four more to take a 7-3 lead. Jackson Neufeld scored back-to-back goals for the Falcons followed by scores from Chaiton Williams and Jack Morris. UM led 8-3 at the break.
UAH scored first to open the second half to trim the lead to four, but once again Montevallo responded with multiple goals to keep the gap in tact. UM outscored UAH 5-3 in the third and led 13-6. The Chargers scored three times in the fourth, but were unable to gather the momentum they needed to threaten the Falcons
Primus led the Falcons with four goals on the day, coming on eight shots. Neufeld added three and Jack Morris two. Trevayne Hunter had three assists while Pecoraro had five ground balls. Kyle Little made 15 saves in goal for UM, facing down 55 UAH shots
Vender was the only Charger with multiple goals in the game as he finished with two. Jake Schramm led with three assists. Zak Welsh made 13 saves in goal.
