ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The No. 14 Georgia College & State University Women’s Tennis team (20-4) toppled No. 8 Wingate University (19-4) 4-2 Monday in the opening round of the NCAA Southeast Regional No. 1 at Flagler College.  
 
With the win for the No. 4-seed Bobcats over the No. 5-seed Bulldogs, GCSU will now face No. 1-seed and host Flagler tomorrow, May 2 at 2 p.m.  
 
GCSU got the doubles point with wins in the second and third slots. Second doubles was the first to finish, as Ashton Morrison (Cumming, Georgia) and Jada Young (Hilton Head Island, South Carolina) beat Elena Gunfaus and Alex Lopez 6-3.  
 
The Bulldogs evened things out in first doubles, with a loss for Emma Fleming (Cumming, Georgia) and Chiara Santoro (Santa Ursula, Spain) 7-6[3] to Chloe Kosmrlj and Suzuka Sambyakugari.  
 
Third doubles decided the point, with Sofia Shing (Auckland, New Zealand) and Shradha Chhabra (New Delhi, India) outlasting Gaya Solomon and Saga Berggren in a 7-6[5] marathon. 
 
GCSU doubled its lead with the first singles finish. Young buzzed through Solomon in second singles 6-2, 6-3. Wingate got on the board next in fifth singles, as Morrison lost to Flaminia Guidantoni 6-3, 6-2. The Bulldogs then pulled even at 2-2 after a win in fourth singles. There, Santoro dropped a 7-5, 6-4 bout to Sambyakugari. 
 
Next came the sixth line, which saw Chhabra beat Lopez 6-2, 2-6, 6-2. Chhabra is now 3-2 in three-set singles matches this season. Fleming clinched the bout in third singles, using a pair of 6-4 sets to get through Gunfaus.  
 
Young is 14-6 this season in singles. Chhabra improves to 18-5, while Fleming is now 16-5. The 20 wins are the most for Bobcat Women’s Tennis since going 20-6 in 2016.  
 
The Bobcats and Saints are set to play tomorrow, May 2 at 2 p.m. for a spot in the NCAA Division II Tennis Championship.
