MORROW, Ga. – Clayton State University announced on Friday that head women's soccer coach Ross Henderson has accepted the position of Head Women's Soccer Coach at Western Illinois University. Coach Henderson finished his coaching career with Clayton State with an overall record of 24-25-11 in his four plus seasons.
Henderson was appointed as the head coach in the 2021 season after replacing departing coach Fergel Ford, leading the team to a 6-5 record after starting the season 0-2-1. The Lakers experienced success with Henderson leading them, especially this past season going 8-3-6. The 2024 season was the first winning season for the Lakers since 2019, and three losses are the fewest since 2005. Under his direction, the team's goal differential was 118-102.
Throughout his career at Clayton State, Henderson coached many standout players. He coached seven all-conference players, two All-Region honorees, and one All-American. Academically, the Lakers maintained a GPA above 3.0, earning the United Soccer Coaches (USC) Scholar Award twice.. Additionally, Henderson guided nine College Sports Communicators (CSC) All-District selections, 56 PBC Presidential Honor Roll honorees, and 33 PBC Team of Academic Distinction selections. The Lakers were also very active in the community volunteering at various events including campus clean up and participating in different community events.

His dedication and leadership have not only brought success, but have also positioned the team for a bright future. I am grateful for his contributions and wish him all the best in his new endeavor."
Before becoming Head Coach, Henderson served as an Assistant Coach from 2018-2021 with the Lakers, achieving a record of 17-18-6 during that time. Before joining Clayton State, Henderson played professionally for the Myrtle Beach Mutiny from 2014-17. He played his college soccer at Erskine from 2012-15 starting in 57 matches and earning three all-conference selections. In addition, Henderson received his UEFA B-License in 2023.
A national search for the next Head Coach for Women's Soccer at Clayton State will begin immediately.
