AUGUSTA, GA -- Following a very successful winter sports season, Augusta University has moved into the top spot in the latest update of the PBC Commissioner's Cup, released on Thursday. Flagler moves down one spot into second place with North Georgia maintaining third.
The Jaguars advance following the success of their basketball teams. The men's team, who begin play in the NCAA Southeast Regional this weekend, finished in a tie for second in the standings while the women's team was third. Augusta has captured 37 of the 44 points available to them for an .841 overall rating.
Flagler is narrowly behind at .791 after their men's and women's indoor track & field teams both took second place at the PBC Championships. Embry-Riddle, who captured both crowns, is an associate member and not included in Commissioner's Cup calculations, so Flagler took the maximum four points in both events.
The North Georgia women's basketball team won the PBC regular-season championship and hosts the NCAA Regional starting on Friday. That result helped the Nighthawks to a .789 rating, just .003 behind Flagler.
The PBC Commissioner's Cup is presented annually to the best overall athletic department based on regular-season final standings (with exceptions for golf, track and cross country which are based on PBC Tournament results). The award is presented in late May during the PBC annual meetings.
Teams are ranked according to how many points they earn divided by how many are available to them, depending on which sports they sponsor. The number of available points in each sport is based on the number of teams participating in that sport. Associate members are not counted in the calculations.
