North Georgia Takes Big Lead on Day Two of NCAA Men's Golf Regionals

HOWIE-IN-THE-HILLS, FLA -- The University of North Georgia men's golf team put on a shot-making display on Friday, shooting an unprecedented 15-under par as a team to take a commanding 11-stroke lead following the second round of the NCAA South/Southeast Regional at Mission Inn Resort. The Nighthawks are now -18 for the tournament, 11 strokes clear of second-place Wingate with one round to go on Saturday.

Columbus State is also in contention, sitting in fourth place at three-under. USC Aiken and Georgia Southwestern are tied for seventh with Lander in 10th and Flagler 18th. The top three teams and top two individuals not on an advancing team are automatically qualified for the NCAA National Championships. Other region teams may receive national bids from the NCAA following the event.'

Play was suspended late on Friday with six groups still on the course from two schools.  Those groups will finish their second rounds on Saturday before the third round begins.

The Nighthawks scored an amazing 22 birdies on Friday and were nearly unstoppable on the back nine with 14 birdies and one bogey. Jack Vajda, Hughes Threlkeld and Hunter Smith each fired a four-under 68 with Ethan Day one stroke back with a three-under 69. All three players are ranked among the top 12 on the individual leaderboard.

King's AAsmund Norum, playing as an individual, leads the tournament with at 10-under after shooting a seven-under 65 on Friday.

Columbus State faltered on the front nine, but rallied on the back with 12 birdies and four bogeys on the back, finishing a +1 on the day and three-under for the tournament. Russell Makepeace shot a three-under 69 on the day, with only one bogey and four birdies. Martin Gruendemann shot a 35 on the back nine (par 37) to finish at even-par for the round.

Georgia Southwestern shaved five strokes off their day one score with an even-par on Friday. Felipe Gomez shot a 69 with Joao Costa a 72. USC Aiken slid a couple of spots, going +6 on their round. Nick Goellner led with even par, going bogey-free with two birdies on the back nine.

Lander also improved five strokes from round one to round two, going +2 on the day. Aaron Lin shot two-under 70 while Edward Rahm was +1 thanks to an eagle on the 14th hole. Gaston Edberg was also one-over on his round. Flagler was led by Nic Eberhard who was +1 on the day.
