Columbus State Wins 2017-18 PBC Commissioner’s Cup

HILTON HEAD, SC – Columbus State University was named the winner of the 2017-18 Peach Belt Conference Commissioner’s Cup on Tuesday night at the annual awards dinner in Hilton Head. The Cup is presented annually to the best overall athletic department based on regular-season standings and select championships.  The Cougars captured 88.5 of a possible 119 points available to them based on the number of sports sponsored.  That is a .744 rating which was .014 more than second-place North Georgia, the closest margin since 2010.

Columbus State captured regular-season championships in men’s and women’s tennis and were co-champions in women’s soccer.  The Cougars were also second in men’s golf and men’s track and third in baseball and softball.  Remarkably, 10 of the 13 programs that compete for PBC championships finished in the top half of their respective sports.  The 2017-18 Cup is the sixth in school history, all won in the last 12 years.

North Georgia, who won their first Commissioner’s Cup in 2017, won the PBC women’s cross country, women’s basketball and softball championships in 2018 and were co-champions in women’s soccer.

Georgia College finished in third place after winning the baseball regular-season crown and finishing second in softball.  UNC Pembroke was fourth with titles in men’s and women’s track and were men’s basketball co-champions.

The PBC Commissioner's Cup is determined by calculating the number of points possible to each school, given the number of sports they participate in, divided by the number of points earned during the year.  Points are determined by placement in the final regular-season standings in each of the PBC's 15 championship sports.
