ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — It wasn't the beginning the Flagler College women's soccer team wanted, but Andrea Fernandez and Annie Habeeb made sure the ending was.
Fernandez scored a pair of goals, while Habeeb netted the other as the third-seeded Saints took a halftime deficit in the Peach Belt Conference Tournament quarterfinal and turned it into a 3-2 victory over sixth-seeded Georgia College at Saints Field.
With the victory, Flagler (13-2-1) moves onto the PBC Tournament semifinals to face Lander University at Blanchard Woods Park located in Evans, Georgia. The two teams will kick-off at 8 p.m. with a chance to advance to the PBC Tournament championship. With the loss, Georgia College ends its season at 8-9.
"The first half we lacked a little urgency and quality, which proved costly against a determined Georgia College with their season on the line," Flagler head coach Ashley Martin said. "The first 15 minutes of the second half was much better, and we deservedly scored multiple goals in quick succession. The team is excited to play Lander in the semifinal."
After a scoreless first half, the Saints came out firing on goal and it was only a matter of time before the home team found paydirt. At the 52nd minute-mark, Fernandez started a three-goal, seven-minute flurry with a free kick from 30 yards out that she tucked in under the crossbar to even the score.
Five minutes later, Fernandez was on the passing end as she found a lunging Habeeb for a header into the left corner for what proved to be the game-winning score in the 58th minute. Habeeb and Fernandez weren't finished, either, as the senior found the freshman on a cross that gave the Saints the insurance goal they needed.
Fernandez's pair of goals pushed her to a team-leading 14 on the season, while Habeeb's goal put her into sole possession of second all-time, passing Charlene Nowotny, with 37 career goals. Overall, Flagler had 19 shots (nine on goal) while the Bobcats had eight shots with five on goal.
