ITA National Coach of the Year Evan Isaacs and Senior Player of the Year Alvaro Regalado
TUCSON, Ariz. - Columbus State University's men's tennis student-athlete Alvaro Regalado and head coach Evan Isaacs captured national awards on Tuesday as the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) announced the organization's highest honors.
Regalado was named the NCAA Division II Senior Player of the Year, while Isaacs was tabbed as the Wilson/ITA DII Men's Coach of the Year. The four-year star went 13-1 for the Cougars in 2021 to finish the season as the second-ranked singles player in the country. Regalado rattled off 13 straight wins following a loss to begin the year to lead Columbus State to the program's third straight NCAA DII national championship match.
In doubles play, Regalado teamed up with Javier Cueto Ramos to become the top doubles pair in all the nation, going 19-2 at the number one position. The duo won four matches in the postseason, including an impressive 6-0 decision in the national championship, to finish the year on a 10-match winning streak.
"I want to congratulate Alvaro on being named the ITA National Senior Player of the Year," commented Isaacs. "It is very deserving, and I know that Alvi is appreciative of this award. Alvaro is a strong competitor, but most importantly, he is a great person. I could not be happier for him."
During his time as a Cougar, Alvaro has led his team to two ITA National Team Indoors titles and one NCAA title.
Isaacs continues to build Columbus State into a dynasty as he took the Cougars to the NCAA DII national championship match for the third straight season in May. CSU ended the year with a 23-1 record and won the program's second consecutive ITA national indoor championship in February in dominating fashion. The Cougars have won four straight PBC Tournament titles and are 345-126 under Isaacs in 20 seasons.
"On behalf of Columbus State University and the athletics program, I congratulate Coach Isaacs on his outstanding achievement of being named the Wilson ITA Coach of the Year," added CSU Athletics Director Todd Reeser. "This honor not only recognizes his tremendous accomplishments as the head coach over this past season, but it underscores the outstanding program he has established during his career at Columbus State University."
Isaacs was named the 2018 ITA Coach of the Year and has won over 700 combined matches at CSU as the head coach of both the men's and women's programs.
