Flagler, Augusta Advance on First Day of PBC Women’s Tennis Tournament

COLUMBUS, GA – The third-seeded Flagler Saints and fifth-seeded Augusta Jaguars both won their quarterfinal matches on day one of the 2022 Peach Belt Conference women’s tennis tournament in Columbus, Ga. Flagler swept sixth-seeded Lander 4-0 while Augusta edged fourth-seeded Georgia College 4-1.

Flagler will meet second-seeded North Georgia in the semifinals on Saturday at 12 noon. Augusta will face off against top-seeded Columbus State, also at noon. All matches are being played at the John W. Walden Tennis Center and hosted by Columbus State.

Flagler opened with the doubles point, winning matches at first and third doubles. Luisa Hrda and Eden Schlagenhauf beat Lander’s Millie Elsborg and Emily Ineson 6-2. Addie Breunich and Florencia Massardo won for the Saints at third doubles against Lander’s Chiara Gerbino and Roberta Armani. Second doubles was not completed.

Flagler continued to roll into singles. Hrda, named the PBC Player of the Year on Thursday, took Gerbino in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 at #1 singles while Schlagenhauf beat Lander’s Maranda Adair 6-2, 6-0.

The other three singles matches went unfinished.

Augusta avenged a regular-season loss to the Bobcats, starting in doubles. The two teams split the first two matches with Augusta’s Teresa Franco Dias and Julia Moraes defeating GC’s Emma Fleming and Emilia Richter 6-2.

GC bounced back at #2 singles as Jordan Bowie and Ashton Morrison downed AU’s Carlota Manero and Edith Croda 6-4.

The doubles point was decided at third doubles, which went to a tiebreaker. Augusta’s Claudia Borbon and Clara deMiguel were knotted a 6-6 with GC’s Chiara Santoro and Sofia Shing. The Jaguars got one service break in the tiebreak to win 7-5 and take a 1-0 match lead.

In singles, Moraes gave the Jaguars their second point with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Richter. Georgia College fired back with a point at #4 singles as Fleming defeated Croda 6-3, 6-3.

But the Jags displayed their strength at the bottom of the lineup with wins at fifth and sixth singles. DeMiguel beat GC’s Ashton Morrison 6-3, 6-1 at #5 singles and Manero downed Bowie 6-3, 6-4 at sixth singles to clinch the match.

Saturday’s semifinal winners will play in the PBC championship match on Sunday at 10am.
