Men's Basketball
Player of the Week: Marcus Overstreet, USC Beaufort
Overstreet had a monster week, averaging 34.5 points and 17 rebounds per game as the Sand Sharks went 1-1. The freshman forward from Chicago, Ill., scored 36 with 25 rebounds in a four-OT win over Columbus State. The 25 rebounds is the second-highest single-game total in PBC history and the most by any player since 2004. The 36 points is the most in the PBC this season. He followed that with 33 points and nine rebounds in a loss to Clayton State. For the week, he shot 78% (31-40) from the field. Overstreet is now fourth in the PBC in scoring and leads the league in rebounding.
Women's Basketball
Player of the Week: Tomiyah Alford, Augusta
Alford led the the Jaguars to a pair of wins last week, averaging 22.5 points and 3.5 rebounds per game. The senior from Barnesville, Ga., scored 25 with three boards in a win over GCSU, then had 20 with four rebounds against Columbus State. She hit 30 of 34 shots from the field (.588) and five of six free throws as Augusta moved alone into second place in the PBC standings. Alford currently leads the PBC in field goal percentage, is 12th in scoring and ninth in steals.
Baseball
Player of the Week: Derek Wylie, Columbus State
Wylie began the 2024 season with a bang, hitting .571 with a 1.071 slugging percentage in three games against Eckerd on opening weekend. The senior outfielder from Warner Robins, Ga., had multiple hits in all three outings, including game two where he went 4-for-7 with two home runs and eight RBIs. His first home run was a three-run shot and his second was a grand slam. He doubled in the third game, going 2-for-3 with two walks, finishing with a .647 on-base percentage for the week.
Pitcher of the Week: Lex Kenny, Georgia College & State University
Kenny pitched four innings of relief against Tuskegee in the season opener, getting the win with no runs allowed. The sophomore from Canton, Ga., entered the game in the sixth with the score tied 1-1 and went the rest of the way, allowing three runs and one walk with no runs scored and seven strikeouts. He struck out the side in the sixth on 12 total pitches and then did it again in the ninth after a leadoff single. Kenny held batters to a .231 average with only one baserunner reaching second base.
Freshman of the Week: Noah Darden, North Georgia
Darden hit .571 with a 1.000 slugging percentage in his first two collegiate games against Mars Hill over the weekend. The freshman outfielder/DH from Cumming, Ga., went 3-for-4 with three doubles in his first game, scoring a run as UNG won 12-4. He added another hit in his second game, scoring again. He drew two walks for a .667 on-base percentage and is tied for third in the league in doubles.
Softball
Player of the Week: Jaden Goodwin, USC Beaufort
Goodwin made an impact in her first six games with USCB, hitting .688 with a 1.000 slugging percentage and four RBIs. The junior from Corner, Ala., started at second base and shortstop, getting multiple hits in four of the six games. She began with a 2-for-2 outing against Anderson with two doubles, two runs scored and an RBI. She went 3-for-3 with a triple in the second game against Anderson, then doubled again versus Erskine. For the week, she scored 11 runs, drove in four, had a .762 on-base percentage and turned a double play.
Pitcher of the Week: Kristen Davis, North Georgia
Davis picked up two wins for #1 North Georgia on opening weekend, pitching 9.0 innings with seven hits and no earned runs allowed. The senior from Calhoun, Ga., pitched four one-hit innings against West Florida in a 12-0 win, striking out five with one walk allowed. She then struck out four over five innings in a 4-2 win over Valdosta State, with only one unearned run. Davis held batters to a .200 average and allowed only one extra base hit.
Freshman of the Week: Austyn Dixon, USC Aiken
Dixon opener her collegiate career with five hits, including a double, four RBIs and a run scored over four games for the 2-2 Pacers. The catcher from Kings Mountain, N.C., went 3-for-4 with three RBIs in the second game against Francis Marion, accounting for all USCA runs scored in the game. She was then 2-for-3 with her first career home run in a win over Newberry
Men's Tennis
Player of the Week: Hugo Regner, Lander
Regner picked up right where he left off last season as he went 2-0 in both singles and doubles for the Bearcats in a pair of shutout wins. The senior from Smalandsstenar, Sweden, defeated Barton's Hannes Tyehad 6-3, 6-1 and Coker's Tom Lamers 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 both at #1 singles. He partnered with Matthew De Groot at #1 doubles to beat Barton's Holgersson and Karlsson 6-4 and Coker's Lamers and Decaluwe 6-3. Regner is currently ranked #19 in the nation in singles and #11 in doubles.
Women's Tennis
Player of the Week: Nadja Meier, Flagler
Meier won three singles matches and teamed with Dana Heimen in a win in doubles at the Florida Southern College Invitational. Meier, who is ranked No. 2 in the country in singles, bested No. 41 Laia Pasini of Florida Southern (6-3, 6-1) and followed that with a 7-6(6), 6-2 victory over Nancy Liu of Rollins. On Sunday, the senior from Potsdam, Germany, cruised over Isabela Mercante of St. Petersburg College (6-4, 6-2).
Men's Indoor Track & Field
Track Athlete of the Week: Jacob D'Aleo, Embry-Riddle
D'Aleo set an NCAA provisional time and broke the Embry-Riddle school record in the 800m at the Celebration Pointe Classic. The senior from Santa Rosa Beach, Fla., finished fourth of 45 runners in the 800, behind only two from the Under Armour team and a DI competitor, in a time of 1:51.85. That time is the 21st-fastest run in NCAA Division II this season. He also ran the anchor leg of the 4x400 relay as the Eagles won in a time of 3:17.21, fastest in the PBC this season.
Field Athlete of the Week: Casey Wood, Flagler
Wood finished in third place in the shot put at the Celebration Pointe Classic with a toss of 14.40m on his last attempt. The freshman from Punta Gorda, Fla., finished behind two throwers from the University of Florida and ahead of 16 other competitors in the event. The put was the second-longest in the PBC this season and 11th-longest in the southeast region.
Women's Indoor Track & Field
Track Athlete of the Week: Ariyonna Jones, Clayton State
Jones ran the fastest 200m and fastest 400m in the Peach Belt at the South Alabama Jaguar Invitational on Sunday. The senior from Dublin, Ga., set an NCAA provisional mark in the 400 with a time of 56.77, finishing third in a field of 36 runners. She then ran the 200 in 24.89, just .08 off the NCAA provisional mark, finishing seventh of 36 runners. Both times were Clayton State school records.
Field Athlete of the Week: Brooklyn Gould, Embry-Riddle
Gould set an NCAA provisional mark in the pentathlon with an Embry-Riddle school-record 3,647 points. The junior from Eagle River, Ak., won the shot put, long jump and 800m in the event, finishing more than 400 points ahead of the 12 competitors she faced. She also ran in the 400m, finishing seventh of 36 with a time of 58.82. Her pentathlon point total is tied for 16th in Division II.
Men's Lacrosse
Player of the Week: Jaden Sealey, Shorter
Sealey scored 11 goals and added an assist as the Hawks opened the 2024 season with wins over Oglethorpe and Tennessee Wesleyan. The senior attacker from North Vancouver, B.C., scored four goals, including the game-winner, with an assist in a 12-10 road win at Oglethorpe. He then scored seven goals with another game-winner with just 2:49 to play, in a 13-12 win over TW. He took 27 shots in total with 17 on goal and added nine ground balls.
