COLUMBUS, GA - The University of North Georgia Nighthawks won their first-ever PBC women's tennis tournament title on Sunday 4-2 over Flagler. The Nighthawks dropped the doubles point to the Saints, but rallied in singles with four of five matches. With the win, UNG improves to 22-1 on the season.
Flagler picked up wins at first and third doubles to jump out to a 1-0 match lead. Dana Heimen and Leonie Floeth beat UNG's Johanna Lippert and Viktorie Wojcikova 7-6 at #1 while Eryka Kruk and Antonia Pfeiffer beat Valentina Ascarrunz and Carolina Reis 6-2.
UNG's Angelina Linnikova and Svetlana Teterina won at second doubles. The duo were undefeated in the PBC Tournament and named the Most Valuable Doubles Team.
UNG got the point back at #4 singles as Ashley Moinard defeated Floeth 6-2, 6-1. Wojcikova then won against Heimen 7-6, 6-0 at second singles.
Flagler's Nadja Meier, the PBC Player of the Year, got a second point for the Saints at #1 singles with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Linnikova. Meier was named the tournament's Most Valuable Singles Player.
Tied at two, UNG took the lead once more with a 7-5, 6-4 win from Teterina at fifth singles over Kruk. Ascarrunz then provided the championship point 6-3, 7-6 over Antonia Pfeiffer.
UNG claims the Peach Belt's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament and should serve as one of the two regional hosts as they were the #1-ranked team in the region in the latest NCAA poll, released last week. Flagler was #2 in that region poll and may serve as the second regional site. NCAA selections will be announced on May 6.
