Georgia Southwestern's Tucker Smith has been named the National Pitcher of the Week by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers' Association (NCBWA). He is the second PBC pitcher to win the national award this year.
Smith threw the first no-hitter in the Peach Belt since 2017 and the first no-hitter in a conference game since 2005 as he blanked Claflin in the series opener. The senior from Fort Walton Beach, Fla., hit Claflin’s first batter of the game, then proceeded to set down the next 27 in order, coming that close to a perfect game. He issued no hits and no walks while striking out 12. It was the first no-hitter for GSW in the NCAA era and he did it with 115 pitches, 84 for strikes. The 2019 PBC Pitcher of the Year, Smith leads the league in ERA and opponent batting average and is tied for fourth in strikeouts.
Smith joins North Georgia's Parker Morrison as winners of the national pitcher award. The PBC has also had three players named the National Player of the Week, giving the league five national winners of the 10 that have been presented so far this year.
