GREENWOOD, S.C. – Flagler College scored four runs in the fourth and added two more in the fifth to defeat Georgia Southwestern State University 7-2 in a Peach Belt Conference Tournament baseball game Monday afternoon at Stephen B. Dolny Stadium.
Flagler extended its winning streak to seven matches and improved to 29-22. The Saints have won 13-of-its-last-15 games. Georgia Southwestern dropped to 35-18 overall and will have to wait to see if it earns an at-large berth to the regional. Flagler advances to the best-of-three championship series at Georgia College & State University, which starts Thursday at 6 p.m.
Jesse Sullivan and Taylor Clapp each hit a single to start the fourth inning. Payton Palladino dropped down a sacrifice bunt to the pitcher who threw the ball away to first base allowing Sullivan to score and Clapp took third. Luke Welborn followed with a single to center to score Clapp and the Saints led 2-0. A bunt moved both runners up a base and Bryce Fitzgerald's single to center drove in another run. Cade Kresak followed with a sacrifice fly to center for the fourth run of the inning.
That was more than enough for Benjamin Stubbs (4-2) who allowed one earned run on five hits in six-plus innings of work. He finished with seven strikeouts Steven Reiss closed out the game to record his first save of the season.
Mason Gray collected three singles and scored a run. Fitzgerald finished the game 2-for-4 with a triple and two runs batted in. Sullivan went 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored, and one RBI.
Grant Adams (6-7) took the loss for the Hurricanes. He surrendered three earned runs on seven hits in four-plus innings.
Noah Roberts finished with two singles and he scored a run.
